Sixty thousand dollar debt
I was talking to a coworker the other day, and she told me quite a story. Her stepson (29 years old) had apparently forged his dad’s signature on some credit cards and had racked up some $60,000+ in debt. He’d given some girl all new furniture, was paying her rent and everything. He also bought a new laptop and apparently just blew a bunch of money on nonsense. I can’t even imagine how anybody could do anything like that. The father (57 years old) isn’t even going to prosecute him. On one hand, I can see that. I mean, it is his own son. But what’s to say the son isn’t going to do it again? If his dad just lets him get away with it, there’s no stopping him the next time. Not only is he letting him get away with it… the father is going to pay it off without a single word. The son isn’t going to pay a single thing. The coworker (stepmother to the son) wants to prosecute and I guess it’s taking a toll on her marriage (I don’t blame her). I just can’t even fathom how you could do that to a family member (not that doing it to a stranger would be any better, of course).
