This is a paper I wrote for my Intro to Philosophy class. We watched a debate and were told to write a paper. This was the assignment:

What do you think was the strongest point of Dr. Craig’s and what do you think was the strongest point of Dr. Dacey’s in the debate? Why do you think these were the strongest, rather than some of their other points? Did the other side have an answer to this? If so, was it a good response/not-so-good response, etc? Why? Finally, which side has the overall strongest evidence supporting their claim? Why do you think so?

I believe the first argument was the best given for theism. If there were a universe, it would seem that there has to be a purpose for it. Without a purpose, it would seem that everything in this universe—right down to why we are here—is merely coincidence, made possible only by random chance. If that were the case, it would hardly seem worth living any kind of life. The other arguments given didn’t seem quite as strong to me.

The second argument given was that everything has a cause, including the beginning of the universe. Personally, I don’t think there was ever a time “before” the universe. I think it has always been around (and will continue to be around for eternity). No matter what science thinks it can prove, unless they are able to invent a time machine, nobody can know for sure. A few centuries ago we thought the earth was flat, and we turned out to be wrong. I think this whole “beginning” theory is just that—a theory.

For the third argument, Dr. Craig talked about evolution, chance, and intelligent design, saying that it would be nearly impossible for us to exist considering the slim chances. To that, I say that there is still a chance, even if it is the tiniest fraction of a percent. Again, people have been wrong in the past, and I think this is just another case where the universe has happened to have everything set up just right. We just got lucky.
Moral values were another argument brought up in Dr. Craig’s trying to prove that theism is the logical choice. I think that values are determined by us—not by some all-powerful being. If something is hurting somebody—mentally, emotionally, or physically—it would only be logical to assume that that action is morally wrong.

The last argument given for theism is the weakest, in my opinion. It requires belief in a certain religion that doesn’t happen to be everybody’s religion. By sticking to one religion, I think Dr. Craig has limited his ability to communicate with a large number of people. There are several explanations to explain this seemingly “resurrection” of Jesus, even if they aren’t what we believe. The mind often plays tricks, and it is possible that somebody stole his body (perhaps even the church itself) in order to prove that he really had risen from the grave.

The argument for atheism was much stronger in my opinion, and I felt there were two strong points that were equally matched. The first is the idea that evolution isn’t always intelligent at all. Dr. Dacey gave examples of humans with our narrow breathing passages and how close they are to our throats, which often leads to choking. The other argument that I thought was just as solid was the idea of pointless suffering. I have never understood how those who believe in God can justify the endless suffering of the millions of people in poorer countries. If there were a God, it would make sense for Him to put an end to all the pointless suffering that happens to children and people around the world.

The idea of God being hidden makes sense to me. I believe that if we were to see Him, we would be so overwhelmed that we wouldn’t even be able to comprehend what we were seeing. Either that, or we do see Him and we don’t even realize that we are. Perhaps God is hidden only by camouflage. There are plenty of things we don’t see and yet we know they exist. In my opinion, this was a weak point in the argument for atheism.

I don’t believe the success of science would matter one way or another if there were or weren’t God. In everyday life (at least for me), I am not constantly thinking about God and what He might be thinking about me, and I don’t think it has affected me any differently than somebody who does think about Him consistently. Perhaps God is the one who put us here just to watch what we could do with the sciences.
As for the mind-brain connection, I don’t believe that will ever be explained (or at least not in my lifetime). The soul is something beyond our mental spectrum and just another thing I don’t think we’re meant to understand. I believe the soul is beyond our comprehension, and we will only ever be able to understand a tiny portion of it.

Between the two sides, I don’t think I can make a decision on who is right or wrong. As stated before, I believe God (or gods or a “higher power”) is beyond anything we can ever imagine, so I don’t think we will ever know (or be able to prove) if any kind of higher power exists. Even if one did (or did not), I’m not so sure it would change the way the world works. People would still be people, there would still be suffering, there would still be good times and bad times, etc. In the end, I think the best anybody can do is promote and practice toward others and do the very best in whatever it is they’re trying to accomplish in life.

The eclipse tonight was absolutely beautiful. When I was very young I actually got to witness a solar eclipse, but I don’t remember a whole lot about it (except my dad trying to do the thing with the tiny hole in the shoe box). My sister called during the whole ordeal, and we were talking about how we felt so displaced from nature ever since we moved to the city. It’s strange how cranky I get (especially in the winter) when I can’t just go outside and do something.

Life seemed so much simpler back on the hobby farm my parents had. My brother, sister, and I would all sleep out on our big back porch under the stars at night simply because we could. Then again, the reason we started that was because we got in trouble one time… but that’s not the point. In the city, especially living in an apartment complex, you don’t get that same sort of distanced privacy you can if you live in what used to be a corn field less than ten years ago.

That’s not to say I dislike the city, of course. It definitely has its advantages. Living in the country means you only get to go to the store once a week (which makes it a big deal), and going to college would cost a whole lot of money. Not to mention there’s little to no possibility of living on your own unless you want to buy a few acres and plan on spending a good ten or twenty years there. In the city, rent is almost always done on a yearly basis (unless you’re buying a house). In the country, there’s simply nothing to rent. You buy or you move to the city or you inherit something from one of your relatives.

I don’t plan on living in the country for awhile, but I do hope it’s somewhere in my distant future. I’ve thought about taking a road trip out west (provided I can save the money) and camp everywhere along the way. That’d be nice.

One of the things I enjoy the most about my job is being able to help out elderly people with their mundane grocery shopping needs. I don’t know why, but I’ve always thought people who have lived that long deserve so much more respect than the younger generation tends to give them. They’ve lived through so much and (as far as I can tell) have a great deal of wisdom if kids would take the time to listen to them. I wish I were brave enough to just walk up to older people and ask them to tell me a story (it wouldn’t matter what the story was).

Anyway, on to the main topic. Today, I worked at the U-Scan machine. Most older people don’t like them because they’re technology and they’d rather have human interaction because it’s what they’re used to (and it’s a heck of a lot more reliable than some stupid computer that weighs what you’ve scanned). I was working on a rubber-band ball (irrelevant, but amusing nonetheless), and I noticed something “off” about the lady who was using one of the machines. She had an oxygen tank with her (in the cart), and she’d been having trouble breathing so she sat down on the bag scale. Immediately I went over to her and asked if she was okay.

She said she was fine, and then handed me a list and asked me to go pick up a few more things. This, my friends, is what I live for. I love helping people when I can. I happily agreed, told her it was no problem, and bounded off toward the salad dressing aisle before realizing I didn’t know which brand she wanted. I did a quick u-turn and asked her if she had any particular brand in mind, and she said she didn’t. I ended up getting her dressing and a roll of paper towels, as well as scanning her order for her, and I just felt so good about it. I think that’s what life is really about (at least for me). Just helping where I can, when I can, for those who need it.

I’ve been interested in PHP and MySQL for a few years now. It wasn’t until last year, however, that I finally sat down and learned how to actually do something with it. I created a forum with a few (very small) features that I was pretty proud of. I think it took me about two weeks before I even felt it was worth anything. I ended up dropping it (due to lack of time/interest), and eventually deleted the files.

Yesterday, I started coding a new forum. I’m really liking the way this one is turning out, and things seem a whole lot easier this time around. Of course, that’s probably because I’ve done this same kind of application before. Either way, I’m finally feeling nearly “fluent” in PHP and MySQL, and that’s always something nice. I do have a great deal of difficulty sifting through what other people have coded, though… but maybe that’s just because they have a different “accent” when they code.

I can’t imagine being famous. Actually, I can’t even imagine being rich. If I were, I don’t think I could handle it. Having all that money around (even if it were in a bank and I didn’t spend all my money on things that I kept with me), would really make me nervous. Heck, I’m always afraid somebody is going to steal my three-year-old iBook. Which, honestly, I could see happening. Having more than that stolen would devastate me, even if I were rich. Sure, I could buy a new one, but it would never be quite like this one. For whatever reason, I think being rich would be an awful thing to be. I think being comfortable is fine, though. I’d like to have a little bit more leeway on things than I do right now. Unfortunately, being a student and working a not-so-great job doesn’t really help with that.

I love learning. I know that’s a really nerdy thing to say, but it’s true. Freerice.com is a really neat website/fundraiser that provides (you guessed it) free rice to people who need it. They work through the UN, though I’m not quite sure how it works. I realize that when I get an answer right, they claim to donate 20 grains of rice to the fund, but how is that paid for? Obviously I’m not paying for it directly. There are banner ads on the bottom of the pages, but I can’t help but wonder if that really works or not. Do people even click those? Or do the companies pay per impression instead of per-click? Because really, even if you don’t click the ad, you still see it. And what better way to see it than while you’re thinking and learning.

Either way, I think it’s an excellent way to learn and add to your vocabulary. I spent a good couple of hours sifting through the words. I think they do a pretty good job of not repeating words, too. Not only that, but from their FAQs, it looks like they’re continuing to add more words as they go.

I was talking to a coworker the other day, and she told me quite a story. Her stepson (29 years old) had apparently forged his dad’s signature on some credit cards and had racked up some $60,000+ in debt. He’d given some girl all new furniture, was paying her rent and everything. He also bought a new laptop and apparently just blew a bunch of money on nonsense. I can’t even imagine how anybody could do anything like that. The father (57 years old) isn’t even going to prosecute him. On one hand, I can see that. I mean, it is his own son. But what’s to say the son isn’t going to do it again? If his dad just lets him get away with it, there’s no stopping him the next time. Not only is he letting him get away with it… the father is going to pay it off without a single word. The son isn’t going to pay a single thing. The coworker (stepmother to the son) wants to prosecute and I guess it’s taking a toll on her marriage (I don’t blame her). I just can’t even fathom how you could do that to a family member (not that doing it to a stranger would be any better, of course).
